Choral Course Friday July 9th - Sunday July 11th 2010
Feed My Lambs, Caernarfon.
Director: John Huw Davies
Feed My Lambs, Caernarfon, is a 19th Century schoolroom, recently renovated to the highest standards. Built in 1836 to provide an infants’ school for the British Free School across the road (now demolished), it then went on to serve as a canteen for the main school and was used for various community purposes until it was closed for lack of funds for maintenance. It was bought by the local parish and much work, with the aid of a Heritage Lottery Grant, has seen this building restored and generously equipped to provide once more a much appreciated facility for the community.
NWSS Choral Repertoire:
F. CavalliMagnificat in D (Ed: Faber)
W MozartMissa Brevis in B flat K275 (Ed: Kalmus)
Other lighter pieces will be also studied during the weekend
Cavalli, although best known for his operatic works, was Maestro di Capella at St. Mark's, Venice from 1668, and this 'Magnificat' is written in the grand polychoral style in which so much of the music for that great church was written. Singers who have attended NWSS courses in the last two years will find the comparison between music of the French court of Louis XIV written by De Lalande and Charpentier, and the Italian style of the same period facinating. The three composers lived in the 17 century, but worked in the very different atmospheres of France and Italy. This Magnificat is for eight voices divided mainly into two choirs, with sections for larger and smaller groups, accompanied by strings and organ.
Mozart's B flat Missa Brevis (K275) was written in 1777, and first performed at Salzburg whilst Mozart was away on tour. His father wrote to him saying 'Cecarelli (a castrato new to the choir) sang excellently' - buth many listeners thought that the light hearted, gavotte - like setting of the 'Dona Nobis Pacem' was 'an open mockery of the holy text'!
